Should we believe in the new Terminator video game?

The French publisher Nacon will launch a new game from the Terminator universe at the end of 2024. It will be a survival experience, set after the first two films of the cult saga (the only ones that count).

Yet another survival game will be released in 2024, but the saga on which it is based could help it quickly gain popularity. During a conference broadcast on February 29, 2024, Nacon unveiled a new teaser for Terminator: Survivors. This adaptation will be available from October 24 on Steam, in early access, before releasing later on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

Terminator: Survivors will celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the first film, directed by James Cameron. It will also follow the filmmaker’s two feature films – the only ones that really mattered when we see what the saga became afterwards. To compete in the face of keen competition (we recall that the phenomenon Palworld is a survival game), Terminator: Survivors focuses on its post-apocalyptic universe and the terrible threat represented by machines.

Terminator: Survivors, a future good survival game?

Reasons to believe

  • The Terminator universe provides an interesting base to justify survival mechanics. After all, it is a question of organizing resistance against super powerful robots. The objective will first be to collect resources in order to establish a base.
  • There will obviously be only one Terminator T-800 to face, which will pose a constant threat to the players.
  • It will also be necessary to deal with human looters, which could lead to a great diversity in the situations to be tackled.
  • You can play alone or cooperatively, with groups of up to four survivors. If there are real collaboration mechanisms, that will be an additional argument.
  • Teminator: Survivors will be faithful to the saga. “ You discover a world meticulously developed by a team of fans, where many references to James Cameron’s masterpiece are hidden », We can read on Steam. We will come across, for example, emblematic characters.
  • Nacon has proven, with RoboCop: Rogue Citythat he knew how to respect cult films.

Reasons not to believe it

  • No gameplay video has been released, which can be worrying a few months before launch.
  • The development studio has only released two games so far, TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 And Rims Racing. Two games of… motorcycles. We are very far from the survival genre. Nacon Studio Milan really pulls off the splits, and it’s a huge risk for such an ambitious project.
  • You should always be wary of film adaptations into video games. We take as proof Terminator: Resistance, a mediocre shooter. The popularity of James Cameron’s films will not be enough and may even prove to be a double-edged sword if the disappointment is too great.
  • The survival genre is ultra-competitive and, to stand out, you have to offer a solid and successful experience. Teminator: Survivors is it too late? Maybe, and it will need innovative gameplay to stand out from the rest. The task of Nacon Studio Milan is complex.
