Silent Hill 2: Masahiro Ito sweeps away fan theories about James Sunderland

Last week, Konami formalized the remake of Silent Hill 2developped by Bloober Team, but also featuring composer Akira Yamaoka and creature designer Masahiro Ito. The latter is very present on social networks and wanted to put the dots on the i following the first trailer for this remake.

In the video, we find the famous plan of the beginning of the game where James Sunderlandthe main character of Silent Hill 2, looks in a mirror. In the original 2002 opus, the graphic quality was not the same as today, the eyes of james were plunged into total darkness, but fans discovered that by artificially increasing the brightness, the character actually appears to be looking in the direction of the player ! Enough to break the fourth wall and offer a new reading of the scenario, this camera look has caused a lot of digital ink to flow, but in fact, it means nothing.

Because yes, the fans were disappointed to see james do look in the direction of the mirror in the remake of Silent Hill 2, which quite annoyed Masahiro Ito, creative director of the original game. On Twitterhe explains that no, the character does not look at the player, because the latter is not in the story. No camera gaze or broken fourth wall here, james is focused on his mission (to find his wife in silent Hill). Masahiro Ito had also explained a few years ago, about the contents of the car of james (we will not say more to avoid any spoiler) that the developers of the original game didn’t pay attention to some details like this, as the player normally couldn’t see them. The car is closed, and the face of james is partially immersed in darkness. And for the purists who still refute this explanation, Masahiro Ito recalls in passing that he was a character and creature designer, but also a director of several cutscenes, he also participated in the writing of the script and the lighting of the scenes. . Suffice to say that he knows his subject well.
