Silvretta Montafon – The next avalanche hit the Vorarlberg ski slope

The tense avalanche situation in western Austria continues. After a large-scale deployment of the rescue workers in the Montafon municipality of Tschagguns on Wednesday and an avalanche on a ski route on the Arlberg on Thursday, the search parties also had to move out in the Silvretta Montafon.

On Thursday morning, shortly after 10 a.m., a piste rescuer informed the Vorarlberg rescue and fire brigade control center that an avalanche had come from piste 24 in the Silvretta Montafon ski area. The piste rescue immediately carried out an avalanche search and a search with a “RECCO detector” at the site of the accident, which was located in the municipality of St. Gallenkirch at an altitude of 1597 meters. In the meantime, two dog handlers and 16 people from the mountain rescue team were flown to the avalanche cone by the “Libelle” police helicopter. Since neither the search dogs hit nor a three-time probe produced a result, the search was terminated at 10:57 a.m. No people were buried or injured. In addition to the “Libelle” police helicopter, the “Christophorus 8” and “Robin 1” emergency medical helicopters from the private Schenk Air company were in use.
