Skeleton driver – multi-talented Baumgartner is chasing an Olympic medal

Sarah Baumgartner competes in skeleton at the Youth Olympic Games in Korea. But she also continues to train in her original sport, athletics. The fall on the Olympic track last year no longer plays a role in the 16-year-old’s mind.

Have fun, step on the gas, deliver. This is Sarah Baumgartner’s motto at the Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon (Kor). In the skeleton competition (Monday, 8.30 CET) she is one of the extended favorites for a medal. “A place in the top 6 would be super cool,” Baumgartner wants to get a taste of the precious metal. Extraordinary, considering that the 16-year-old comes from athletics and this is her first full skeleton season. She now loves both sports. The pole vaulter doesn’t want to miss out on anything: “I train normally in athletics and have my three or four days where I compete in skeleton in Innsbruck.” Training wasn’t ideal. Last Saturday she boarded the plane to Asia with the red-white-red delegation. However, the training was not perfect: “It could be better, but it could also be worse. I’m working well and I’m sure that my trainer and I can manage it.” On the track where she had her first fall as a skeleton rider. The all-rounder from Michaelbeuern has now ticked this off: “I know where my problems are and can work on them.”
