Ski hope fights – Lyme disease and glandular fever diagnosed

In 2020, Amanda Salzgeber was crowned Youth Olympic Champion in Switzerland. The first European Cup points followed, and at the Junior World Championships in 2022 she took seventh place in the downhill. In the past winter it had become quiet around the Vorarlbergers. Not without reason, as the 21-year-old now reveals.

On December 18, 2022, Amanda Salzgeber finished 26th in the FIS giant slalom in St. Lambrecht, 2.56 seconds behind Michelle Niederwieser. Her last race so far. At the beginning of January, the 21-year-old had to cancel the planned participation in the European Cup speed races in Zauchensee – and end the season. “Last summer I had a corona disease,” said the Bartholomäbergerin in the “Winter Arena” on the sports channel K19. “Right after that we went to the training camp in Chile. As a result, I often felt tired and sick. My performance continued to drop until I had the feeling that I couldn’t do it anymore.” Long guesswork The reason for this was unclear for a long time. “I didn’t know what was wrong with me for two months,” said the combined youth Olympic champion of 2020. It was not until spring that glandular fever and Lyme disease were finally diagnosed. “I’m glad something has been found now.”Hope for AutumnSalzgeber is optimistic that she can return to the slopes next season. “My doctors think that I’ll be able to train again in the fall,” reveals the Ski Austria B squad athlete.
