If you are using a Philips DreamStation 2 continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device, be careful of the risk of overheating. This is the alert given by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in its news of December 14, 2023. As a reminder, Philips DreamStation 2 devices are used by people suffering from heart apnea. sleep. This communication follows recommendations from the Food and Drugs Agency (FDA), the American health authorities.

Sleep apnea: this CPAP device presents a risk of overheating

As specified by the ANSM, the Philips DreamStation 2 PPCs have been “notably deployed as part of the replacement of defective DreamStation 1 CPAP devices, subject to the June 2021 recall”. In total, in France, there are 77,250 DreamStation 2 CPAP devices.

At present, “two reports without consequences for patients” were noted in France. These cases could be linked to an overheating problem with DreamStation 2 PPCs. The first took place in February 2022 and the second in February 2023. On the other hand, in the United States, the FDA “informs having received 270 reports related to this problem such as smoke, burning, fire and other signs of overheating”.

Also, the French medicine policeman explains in his press release that he is carrying out investigations and having “asked the Philips company to provide an inventory of overheating reported at European level with these machines”. In addition, patient associations, health professionals, representatives of home care providers (PSAD) were “sensitized” to this problem and inform them if they notice an incident of this type.

CPAP device and risk of overheating: ANSM recommendations

In its press release, the ANSM lists the good reflexes to adopt to limit the risks of overheating of Philips DreamStation 2 PPCs:

  • Pay attention to any signs of overheating (burning smell, smoke, etc.)
  • Unplug the CPAP device if a malfunction is observed
  • Contact the home health provider or your doctor in case of malfunction
  • Report the defective product by indicating the full serial number of the device

The ANSM also recalls the advice for use which can also be found in the instructions for the Philips DreamStation 2 CPAP devices:

  • Inspect electrical cords and cables regularly for damage or wear
  • Do not plug the appliance into an extension cord
  • Place the device on a flat, stable surface
  • Do not place PPC DreamStation 2 Philips on flammable materials
  • Position the device on a flat, stable surface
  • Wait for the humidifier heater plate and water to cool when emptying the water tank.

“There is a risk of burns if you touch the heater plate, come into contact with hot water or touch the base of the tank”underlines the ANSM.
