It has been expected since 2019, when the partnership between Samsung and AMD was announced. The South Korean giant will finally launch these SoCs with Radeon GPUs. It was at Computex 2021, last June, that the thing was formalized, guaranteeing the arrival of such chips on smartphones in the Galaxy S range.

It is now official for 2022. Through a tweet, Samsung Semiconductor announces a date for the presentation of its new chip: January 11, 2022.

A game console architecture

This AMD GPU is advertised as “born of RDNA 2”, the architecture that notably equips AMD’s RX6 graphics cards, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X and Series S. This will not only bring ray tracing, for more beautiful reflection effects and better management of lights, but also VRS (or Variable Rate Shading), a technique allowing to gain in performances by displaying differently the elements which are in the main field of vision and those which are in periphery.

Note that if ray tracing was particularly expected on ARM chips, the VRS is already available from the competition since the Snapdragon 888.

Towards new devices?

In its tweet, Samsung whistles the end of recess and claims that “the gaming market is about to get serious“. Note that the brand does not specify “on smartphone», But talks about gaming in general. We can therefore imagine new devices equipped with these Exynos SoCs.

If we wish with all our wishes a PC capable of competing with the MacBook M1, we can especially expect a portable console like the Snapdragon G3x presented in early December by Qualcomm. This is more aimed at the Nintendo Switch market.

Of course, these are assumptions and we should especially expect the integration of this SoC in the Galaxy S22 and possibly tablets and foldable smartphones during the year.
