Smugglers change route – There are stricter controls at the borders in the east

In order to “avoid” the more closely monitored border areas, smugglers increasingly took the route via Slovakia and the Czech Republic towards Austria. Since our northern neighbor is now increasing surveillance, there is also a need for action in the east of this country.

The Czech police picked up 35 refugees in January – the September total of 292 is an increase that is probably not only due to the weather conditions: The Czech Interior Ministry is now reacting with increased surveillance: Along the border of South Moravia – i.e. from the Waldviertel east to the March and between the Czech Republic and Slovakia – “suspicion-independent controls” have been reintroduced. To ensure that the smugglers, who are constantly adjusting their routes, do not increasingly divert to the country’s eastern border, Austria has responded since Thursday with increased surveillance of the border with Slovakia. Secondary roads are popular routes in the Weinviertel. The main targets are so-called tractor vehicles – mostly panel vans. Therefore, there are no waiting times to be expected at the border crossings, it is said. In the Weinviertel, which lies on both borders, such vehicles could often be found far away from the border. These get there via side routes and usually stop near train stations within the region. Residents talk about operations in which the inmates run away in all directions after police checks – so the police usually have little chance without targeted action.
