So easy? Simple measure increases the performance of solar modules

Bifacial solar cells capture sunlight from two sides. An amazing experiment in Greece showed how yields can be significantly increased.

  • The company Solar Kapital retrofitted white geotextile, a tarpaulin-like fabric, to solar parks in Greece.
  • After this measure, a performance increase of 6.4 percent was measured at the inverters over a period of twelve months.
  • According to the operator, the costs of this measure should be amortized within 2.5 years.
  • In addition, the need for care is lower because there is no need to cut the grass.

Bifacial solar cells are great because they can capture and utilize sunlight from two sides. They make use of the so-called albedo effect, the reflection of sunlight when it hits surfaces. Since white surfaces reflect sunlight much better than black surfaces, those responsible for the project suspected a positive effect on the efficiency of the bifacial solar modules. And thats how it is.

After Solar Kapital underlaid some of the systems with 2,500 square meters of white Geotex and took measurements over a period of one year, the positive effect can now be quantified, reports PV Magazine.

There is currently no shortage of innovative ideas in the field of alternative energy generation. BergWind also has one ready.

The energy measured at the two inverters increased by an average of 6.4 percent. The modules at the test facility in Lagkadas, near Thessaloniki, were connected to two 100-kilowatt inverters, had a fixed tilt of 25 degrees and were mounted 1.5 meters above the ground.

Since the attempt was successful, Solar Kapital now wants to examine and carry out further measures of this kind at other locations. However, the tarpaulin cannot be laid as easily everywhere as in the two test facilities.
