Two news graphics cards GeForce from ASUS will do without any power cable… provided you have the motherboard compatible.

While NVIDIA has just confirmed the upcoming release of its new GeForce “Ada Lovelace” salvo – the RTX 40 SUPER series – the ASUS brand intends to take the opportunity to move the lines a little.

Indeed, some of the Taiwanese manufacturer’s graphics cards should stand out by simply making the power connector disappear. However, there is no question of witchcraft.

PCI Express connector expansion

No, to be able to remove the various 8-pin ports or the famous 12VHPWR connector like this, ASUS is relying on a new technology that the company has already mentioned in the past.

Last May, ASUS presented a GeForce RTX 4070 equipped with a sort of extension of the PCI Express port. This extension, called PCIe High Power Connector, eliminates the need for a power connector: the current required by the graphics card is directly transmitted by the motherboard.

For the moment, there only seems to be any question of marketing two “SUPER” graphics cards in this configuration. Our colleagues from VideoCardz talk about a Strix GeForce RTX 4090 BTF Edition and a TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER BTF White Edition.

Disappearance of CG power cables

In both cases, the technical characteristics of the cards are close to the standard models, however, this unique power supply system makes assembly cleaner.

ASUS does not communicate a release date or price for its two cards, but emphasizes that you must of course have an adequate motherboard: this must integrate the famous extension for the PCI Express port.

It should be noted, however, that a small adapter is being considered by ASUS: it attaches to the PCI Express port extension on the graphics card side and you can connect a power cable to it. Well seen.

Finally, ASUS emphasizes that case manufacturers (Aerocool, be quiet!, Cooler Master, Corsair, Inwin, Lian Li, Phanteks, Siverstone, Thermaltake) are interested and should offer compatible products.
