  • Swiss-born Elly Schlein surprisingly came out on top in the race for the presidency of the social democratic Partito Democratico in Italy.
  • After counting 80 percent of the votes, she led, according to Italian news agencies, with 53 percent.
  • Social Democrats from Switzerland congratulated the 37-year-old on her election success.

Schlein was born in Lugano and has Swiss, Italian and US passports. The social democrat was ahead on Sunday shortly before midnight with 53.8 percent. Stefano Bonaccini, who was traded as the favourite, received 46.2 percent of the votes at this point.

According to Italian news agencies, Lega chairman Matteo Salvini already congratulated Elly Schlein on her victory. Bonaccini said it was now up to Schlein to set “the direction of the party.” The 37-year-old stands for a departure from the ailing Italian Social Democratic Party. It is considered progressive, ecological and feminist.

Congratulations from Switzerland

Schlein is open about her bisexuality and pleads for solidarity with migrants. In doing so, she quickly positioned herself as a counter-program to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Even before all the votes were counted, Swiss SP politicians congratulated the 37-year-old on Twitter.

SP Switzerland is looking forward to working with her. This is what the Zurich National Councilor Fabian Molina wrote on the short message service Twitter on election night. In the same way, the co-president of SP Switzerland Cédric Wermuth congratulated the Italian party colleague.
