Social media censorship in the USA – Supreme Court: Corporations may continue to block individual users – News

  • In the USA, technology companies should remain allowed to block individual users.
  • The Supreme Court has temporarily overruled a Texas law that would prohibit this.

The law, created by conservatives, wanted to prevent social media companies such as Twitter or Facebook from “censoring” individual users based on their opinions or views.

A group of tech companies had sued against the planned conservative law from Texas. This also included Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Such a law would violate the right to freedom of expression, the association said.

Legend:

At the end of April, Republican Taylor Greene spoke out against the alleged Twitter censorship.

Judges John Roberts, Stephern Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett agreed to the corporations’ emergency motion and overturned the law by a majority. The minority would have allowed the law to stand on the grounds that social media had fundamentally changed modern communication and information gathering.

Conservatives keep complaining

In Republican-dominated Texas, the law had been passed by the state legislature and the governor. Conservative and right-wing circles repeatedly complain that the big tech companies are trying to suppress their views.

In Florida, too, an attempt for a law that would have made similar regulations for tech companies was overruled. The supporters of such an undertaking are not limited to these two states.
