In full expansion, the Swiss Cloud player, Infomaniak, is launching the construction of solar power plants in Europe. Manufactured on the Old Continent, they will strengthen its energy autonomy and its promise of sustainable digital technology.

With a product positioning focused on confidentiality and an economically successful year 2023, with a turnover up 18% to 44 million euros, the “small” Infomaniak is determined to develop its energy autonomy . The Swiss Cloud provider demonstrates its commitment to renewable energy by announcing this week its decision to invest in solar power plants manufactured in Europe. Clubic provides you with the details of this beneficial initiative.

Infomaniak is a Swiss company created at the end of the 90s before becoming the first hosting provider in French-speaking Switzerland in 2003. In 2021, the company achieved more than 30 million turnover. Today, Infomaniak has a broad offering that would allow it to be one of the best hosts on the market.

Infomaniak wants to self-produce 50% of its electricity consumption by 2030, thanks in particular to solar energy

The Infomaniak host does not hide its objective: in addition to very real economic independence, the Geneva firm wants to increase its energy autonomy by deploying a new solar power plant each year. This year, it will also deploy the third of its kind, equipped with 364 new panels.

By 2030, the company aims to self-produce 50% of its annual electricity consumption, and solar power plants will contribute greatly to this. Since we were talking about objectives, there is another one that Infomaniak does not hide: that of becoming a leader in the field of renewable energy on the Old Continent.

Today, Infomaniak can already boast of having two solar power plants, with a total capacity of 420 kWp. Let us add to this that all the panels which equip the supplier (1,085 active to date) are manufactured in Europe, in Germany in particular, by the Meyer Burger company, which has renounced lead and uses fewer solvents. At full capacity, this can provide more than half (55%) of the electricity needs of a 700 kW data center.

An investment in renewable energies that is already having an effect

Over the entire year, the two Infomaniak power plants already produce 6 to 7% of the electricity used. We are quite far from utopia, but the results are more than positive. And the undeniable benefits: “ It is important to diversify the renewable energy mix to use hydraulic energy more intelligently. Solar energy can be used to bring water up from rivers to store it and be able to turbine it again to produce electrical energy at night or in bad weather. Glacier water is precious and should be used as a battery rather than being consumed only once », raises awareness of the founder and strategic director of Infomaniak, Boris Siegenthaler.

Infomaniak has invested nearly 900,000 euros in its two solar power plants in production. According to calculations made by the company, the energy from the installations will be almost free after 12 years of operation, while a solar power plant has a lifespan of three decades. Something to find your way around, then.

Knowing that global cloud investments will increase by more than 20% in 2024 and that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused the cost of electricity to jump, renewable and competitive energy could well help create a digital sustainable for the planet. What Infomaniak is doing is, from our point of view and without a bad pun, not a joke. The company is cutting into its margins to try, in its modest way, to protect the planet. You could almost call it “courage”.
