2021 OLED 7 and 8 series will support 4K120 VRR… but not 9 series.
Several models of OLED televisions from the Philips brand will soon receive an update allowing them to fully support the display of 4K definition at 120 frames per second with the variable refresh rate (VRR) mode activated.
VRR will no longer cut resolution in half
These are three references dating from last year: the Philips OLED706, OLED806 and OLED856, the first to ship an HDMI 2.1 port allowing 4K at 120 Hz. Until now they could benefit from 4K quality with 120 frames per second, but without the VRR.
With the VVR activated, it was not possible to reach the famous 4K120. The feature cut image quality in half. A known problem with other manufacturers using Android TV and a MediaTek chip. With the upcoming update, users will be able to take advantage of their TV’s full potential.
As a reminder, VRR is a technology similar to AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync on the PC, which makes it possible to vary the refresh rate of images according to that emitted by the source, improving sharpness and limiting the effects of tearing. image or jerks.
The private Philips premium range of 4K120 VRR
The update will not be rolled out to OLED936 and OLED986, which are higher end models. These are equipped with a dual-chip system that offers better image quality than the 7 and 8 series, but is not compatible with 4K at 120 fps and active VRR.
Philips adds that in the future the brand will try to find a way to bring 4K120 with VRR to dual-chip systems.
In addition, the recently announced Philips OLED807 will be compatible with VRR at maximum quality, but it is not yet known whether it will be on release or via a future update.
