Some things are surprising – the new Range Rover: A flagship is coming

A good 50 years after the presentation of the original Range Rover, Jaguar Land Rover is now bringing the latest generation of the mighty luxury SUV: Based on a new platform, it should not only offer maximum comfort, but also plug-in hybrids with a long electric range and even a pure Stromer variant.

The mighty Brit stood almost monumentally in the showroom of the Stahl car dealership in the 22nd district. So smooth, shiny and glamorous that you don’t want to imagine it off-road. But with a standard air suspension, a ground clearance of up to 30 centimeters and a fording depth of 90 centimeters, the all-wheel drive almost takes on its brother for the rough, the Land Rover Defender, which, as is well known, has left everything rough behind in its new edition. The rear axle is equipped with a limited slip differential. The “Terrain Response 2” system supports the driver with six presets, a user-defined mode and automatic selection off the beaten track. The change to the new generation is of course less serious with the Range Rover, there was a seamless transition, a refinement of the familiar Qualities. Based on a new platform, it should not only offer the highest level of convenience, but also plug-in hybrids with a long electric range and later even a pure Stromer variant. The flagship of the British is 5.05 meters long (including antennas) 1 , 87 meters high and (without mirrors) 2.05 meters wide (with mirrors 2.21 meters). The wheelbase is 3 meters (3.20 m with a long wheelbase). In view of the dimensions, the curb weight of the lightest version can almost be described as delicate at 2379. Outside larger than inside Given the sheer size, it is downright unusual how little space there is in the interior, especially on the back seat. The rear seats of the exhibited model are integrated into a larger structure that forms a clear separation from the trunk. So far, no one has been able to answer me as to whether this is so standard. In any case, I can actually sit thrones in the back seat, but actually can’t accommodate my legs when the driver’s seat is adjusted to my height (1.88 meters), my knees hit. Not only that: There is a fold-out footstool attached to the back of the driver’s seat, the edge of which presses painfully into my shinbone. The electric seat adjustment doesn’t make up for it either. Yes, there is a version with a wheelbase that is 20 centimeters longer, but that you need it to be able to be chauffeured in the second row as normal is surprising. After all, the new Rangy is even offered as a seven-seater. As an aside: there are two extra seats for an extra charge: on the lower half of the trunk lid, including extra speakers and lighting. They call it the Tailgate Event Suite at Land Rover. The fifth seat in the middle is only pro forma, it is better to fold it down electrically, then you have a very solid armrest with an integrated touchscreen for various operating options, including the electric extension of a cup holder, which then has to be exposed manually using a sliding cover. The two 11.4-inch HD touchscreens for the rear passengers, which are very far away from the front headrests, are a bit cramped. E-Range Rover takes its toll, it can also be felt that the floor in the interior is relatively high is. This is due to the fact that space has been created in the underbody to accommodate the battery of the Range Rover with electric drive planned for 2024. There is naturally more space at the front; The interior looks very tidy. The quality of the materials can presumably be designed with a list of surcharges that is relatively open at the top. But here, too, a surprise: The center console has two unclean edges at the transition to the dashboard, which is not appropriate for this price range (from 140,301 euros). The interior looks very tidy. Nevertheless, Land Rover has not done without a dedicated climate control. Good this way. The central touchscreen is a 13.1-inch curved display, the speedometer display is also digital and can also be configured with different views. Amazon’s Alexa is integrated, you don’t have to connect a phone to use it. But you can wirelessly via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Meridian sound system with 35 loudspeakers (two of which are in the headrests) ensures adequate sound. Active noise canceling comes as standard: in each wheel arch, the noise generated by the wheel is recorded by four microphones in order to generate counter-noise on this basis, which is then played into the interior.Infotainment, latest generation The central touchscreen is a 13.1-inch curved -Display. For the first time in a Land Rover, in the new Range Rover it gives haptic feedback when it is touched and pressed. In contrast to other vehicles with an attached screen, the curvature of this one does not look as if the designer had forgotten the display and quickly screwed it on afterwards. Just as positive: Land Rover has not done without dedicated climate control. The latest generation of the in-house Pivi Pro is used as the infotainment system. It can also be used to control the optional electrically opening / closing doors, which also function at an incline of up to 10 degrees. The 13.7-inch speedometer display is also digital and can also be configured with different views. Amazon’s Alexa is integrated, you don’t have to connect a phone to use it. But you can, wirelessly via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Meridian sound system with 35 loudspeakers (two of which are in the headrests) ensures adequate sound. Active Noise Canceling comes as standard: the noise generated by the wheel is recorded by four microphones in each wheel arch in order to generate counter-noise on this basis, which is then played into the interior otherwise hardly as far in the field as with him. The adaptive air suspension is standard, as is the rear-wheel steering, which with a steering angle of up to seven degrees ensures a turning circle of less than eleven meters. The five-link rear axle, in combination with further developed air springs, is intended to decouple the passenger compartment particularly efficiently from the effects of poor road conditions. The roll stabilization “Dynamic Response Pro” ensures quick and comfortable driving on asphalt, which thanks to 48 volts can deliver up to 1400 Nm into the chassis, to prevent the body from tilting sideways. The fact that the new Range Rover is 50 percent stiffer than its predecessor is good for precise driving behavior. All-round cameras, all-round lighting The equipment of the new Range Rover also includes innovative maneuvering lights. They help when maneuvering in dimly lit surroundings by creating a kind of carpet of light around the car. In combination with the 3D surround camera, driving maneuvers in poor lighting conditions are much easier. Parking is even easier when you get out and maneuver the vehicle into a parking space using the app. Extensive range of engines There are an unusually large number of engines for the new Range Rover. The combustion engine range includes three six-cylinder diesels (250, 300 and 350 hp), two six-cylinder mild hybrid petrol engines with 360 and 400 hp (all 48-volt mild hybrids) and a 4.4-liter V8 with 530 hp. From three months after the market launch, there will also be the two plug-in hybrid six-cylinder P440e and P510e with 440 and 510 hp system output respectively. Its lithium-ion battery (38.2 kWh gross), which stores a net 31.8 kWh, enables an electric WLTP range of up to 100 kilometers and allows a top electric speed of 140 km / h. A battery-electric version of the Range Rover is expected to be launched in 2024, and the new Range Rover is expected to be available at dealerships in March. The price list in Austria starts at 140,301 euros for the Range Rover D250 SE.
