Sony camera with great value for money: That’s why the RX100 III is still recommended

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III at a glance

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III has been on the market since 2014 – several generations old in the technology world. The RX 100 itself has now arrived at version VII. Nevertheless, the old-timer is worth recommending for ambitious photographers who want a device that is as compact as possible for relatively little money: The 1-inch image sensor with 20 megapixels still takes excellent photos. In fact, despite its age, the camera still belongs to the top class in terms of image quality in the entire test environment.

The camera also offers something that many models now do without: an integrated electric viewfinder. You have to do without a few other comfort functions, such as a touch display – the 3-inch screen is still operated using buttons. And the RX100 III only creates videos in Full HD with a maximum of 50 frames per second (100 frames per second at 720p). So videos aren’t necessarily the camera’s strengths, but if your main focus is on photography, you won’t find a better compact camera for the asking price.

If you are looking for a more modern camera with more video features and are willing to spend around 150 euros more, the current Sony ZV-1 is also worth a closer look.

Our verdict at the time of testing

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III prevails in the test as currently the best compact camera. Weaknesses? none. The creative camera delivers top results in all categories, and even the current best value for image quality. Another highlight is the electronic viewfinder.
