Sony Interactive Entertainment to Acquire Bungie (Destiny)

There are news for which we do not expect it at all. So Sony will buy Bungie. Yes, you read that right. It just fell. Explanations.

The very well informed Jason Schreier has just announced the news on his Twitter account. Sony to buy Bungie:

NEWS: Sony is buying Bungie, the creator of Destiny, another seismic video game deal that comes just two weeks after Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard.
Bungie has put Xbox on the map. It is now part of PlayStation Studios.

The news is official

But that’s not all, Bungie has also officially confirmed the news on its website.

BUNGIE JOINS SONY INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT (“SIE”)
We believe that games have unlimited potential and that to do anything worthwhile in entertainment, we need to bet big on our vision, our studio and our incredible team of trusted creators who build unforgettable worlds that really matter to people.

In SIE, we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all that we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create entertainment that touches all generations, while preserving the creative independence that beats at the heart of Bungie. Like us, SIA shares the dream of creating and fostering iconic franchises that unite friends around the world, families of all generations, and fans across multiple platforms and entertainment mediums.

Today, Bungie begins its journey to become a global multimedia entertainment company.

Here, we can say that to be new, it is a news. Sony clearly wants to counterattack after Microsoft’s recent strategies. And what better way to do that than to reclaim one of its old (and more iconic) studios.

Bungie and its 900 employees are therefore joining a new big family.

Hermen Hulst, who heads Playstation Studios explains:

I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome Bungie to the PlayStation family! Bungie makes games that are community driven, packed with great technology, and extremely fun to play, and I know everyone at PlayStation Studios will be excited about what we can share and learn together.
