While inflation is peaking, an association is proposing the establishment of a check for 65 euros per month for the 9 million poorest households.

Food prices continue to soar. Inflation on this category reached 12% over one year and more and more households are struggling to cope. The Rural Family association published this Wednesday, February 22 its observatory of food prices. To help families, an anti-inflation basket will be put in place, but this measure is not sufficient for the association. The observation is obvious: a family of two adults and two children must now pay at least 477 euros per month for healthy eating, compared to 450 euros in 2021.

Eating healthy, according to them, means having enough to eat by buying seasonal and sufficiently varied products according to the recommendations of the National Nutrition Plan. In an attempt to allow the most modest French people to eat properly and respect their health despite inflation, Rural Families presented in a letter to the Minister of Health François Braun a monthly allowance project for the 9 million of the poorest households. This check in the amount of 65 euros corresponds to what these households lack to afford to buy healthier food.

A method that could save individuals and the state

This proposed measure is already costed. With an annual cost of 7.2 billion euros, it may seem expensive. Nevertheless it could make money for the state in the long termthis is what the association highlights in this letter: it is “20 billion euros spent treating pathologies that could be avoided.”

But these savings would also affect and above all the portfolio of the French. Healthy products were less affected by the price increase. Inflation was limited to 8.3% for this product category. “ The explanation is due in particular to the fact that the healthiest products for our health are generally the least processed foods and whose production requires fewer intermediaries.“The complaint has been well received by the executive, who will study the proposal in the coming weeks.
