Will M6 follow the example of competing channels by offering its own daily soap opera? While TF1 is broadcasting “Tomorrow belongs to us” and France 2 is offering “Un si grand soleil”, M6 boss Nicolas de Tavernost said in an interview with “Figaro” that he was thinking of launching a soap opera for M6. He specifies that this project is nevertheless very “expensive”.
TF1 has its soap opera Here it all starts and Tomorrow belongs to us. On France 2, we can watch such a big sun. France 3 had More beautiful life. So, will M6 soon be offering its own soap opera? It is in any case a project on which the channel is working, as revealed by the boss of the M6 group, Nicolas de Tavernost, in an interview granted to the Figaro this Thursday morning.
A costly project of around 30 million euros
He reveals the future projects of the channel, in particular this possible soap opera for broadcast on M6. He specifies that “it is an expensive project, of the order of 30 million euros per year, which will take time”. But, he sees an advantage: it is “perfectly suited to video streaming”. Because it’s a key point in M6’s development strategy: invest more in free streaming.
Less investment for sport
Nicolas de Tavernost also specifies that he wants to “offer great documentaries” on the air. But how to finance these new programs, these fictions and these documentaries? Answer: by investing less in sport. He justifies himself with these words: “We have to make choices.”
In his interview, he also returns to the failure of the merger between M6 and TF1… which he regrets: “Our fault is undoubtedly to have been right too soon.” He remains convinced that the merger should have made it possible to resist what he calls the “incredible Big Bang which upsets the balances in the audiovisual sector”, that is to say competition from platforms. And the merger would have been, according to him, a way to deal with it by investing “massively in streaming and content”.
