Soon a Google Pixel Flip? “We are definitely thinking about it”

The Pixel product manager said he was not against the idea of another form factor for the brand’s folding smartphones.

One quirk of the folding smartphone market (which isn’t doing well, by the way) is that nearly all manufacturers focus on the book format rather than the clamshell. However, the valve sells better. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, the two best-selling models in the world were the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Huawei Pocket S.

No doubt the book format, Galaxy Z Fold style, can serve more as a technological showcase than that of the valve, which is often simpler. This is surely the calculation that Google made when releasing its Google Pixel Fold elsewhere, despite a high price of 1799 dollars (as a reminder, it does not come out in France).

Google is interested in it, but remains focused on the Fold

In an article by Tom’s GuideGoogle Pixel product manager George Hwang said he was still interested in the Flip format. “We’re always looking at different types of devices, different technologies, and it’s really interesting. We are definitely thinking about it. »

However, don’t expect a Google Pixel Flip anytime soon. The product manager moderates the heat on this subject. “We want to focus specifically on this format [livre] because of all we can bring to it and make sure we can solve some key user issues, from design to apps to cameras. » Clearly, we focus first on the Fold before seriously thinking about the Flip.

Google being Google, and the brand being used to closing services in which it has invested heavily, George Hwang wants to reassure: “We’re pretty confident in what we’re doing with the Pixel Fold. But we are always exploring other types of devices and other types of technologies. » The door is open.
