Rarely modified, nor turned upside down, the home page of google
could soon be adorned with a new functionality.

The Mountain View firm is currently testing a new display with six custom widgets.

Widgets on the Google homepage

Small change in anticipation for the Google home page. Historically known for its clean interface, the homepage could soon accommodate personalized widgets. The goal: to offer a similar experience to Discover, by offering several “cards” at the bottom of the page that change according to the activity and the history of the user.

More concretely, up to six widgets will appear, the number of cards displayed depending on the size of the screen. The first will be devoted to the weather, displaying the current temperature and forecasts for the next three days, while the second will highlight current trends with the number of searches around the theme. One will advise users on which series and movies to watch next, another will focus on the Stock Market with the state of stock prices and the last two will be devoted to local events and news around Covid-19.

By clicking on one of the widgets, Internet users will be sent to the Knowledge Graph (the block of information on the right of a results page) or to a specific results page. It will still be possible to hide these new cards at will with a dedicated button. The feature is currently only in a very limited testing phase and there is no guarantee of its general deployment in the future.
