In the middle of the European Championships in Munich this Saturday, August 20, Laurent Luyat experienced a small setback. Due to a technical problem, the journalist was forced to improvise on the air.
The vagaries of live have struck once again! Since August 11, the France Télévisions teams have been broadcasting the European Championships in Munich live, from 9 am to late evening. And if everything has gone without a hitch so far, Laurent Luyat experienced a small mishap this Saturday, August 20. While many viewers followed the penultimate evening of athletics – with in particular the final of the men’s 4×400 meter relay and that of the pole vault competition -, they were muted for a few minutes. Around 8:40 p.m., while the pole vaulters, javelin throwers and several 100-meter runners were on the track, a huge crackle was heard on the France 3 antenna.
After a few seconds of floating, the sound disappeared completely. In addition to sports broadcasting, Laurent Luyat then had to improvise to reassure the many viewers : he wrote several sentences on sheets of paper. “Sound out. Sorry”first wrote the presenter before adding: “A matter of a few minutes (seconds)”. And indeed, this small technical bug did not last very long. Back on set, Laurent Luyat was delighted with the end of this problem. “I think it works! Thanks to all the technical team, to the sound. Really sorry for this cut”launched the one who was able to return to the antenna after some health concerns.
Munich European Championships: the rain upset the broadcast
“It’s true that the day was complicated with terrible weather so I think the sound is good now”, continued Laurent Luyat before handing over to the commentators of athletics. And for good reason, downpours fell on Munich in the afternoon, raising fears of a last-minute cancellation. Due to bad weather, the team of journalists in the afternoon had to make do with the means at hand. Since water had infiltrated the France Télévisions set, Matthieu Lartot was forced to present the proofs under an umbrella … before putting on a raincoat to protect himself.
