Samsung confirmed on Monday that the source code for its Galaxy smartphones, tablets and wearables leaked after a recent cyberattack. The South Korean giant, however, wants to be reassuring and does not foresee any impact of this data breach on its activities or on its customers. Last week, the South American hacker group Lapsus$ claimed to have stolen 190 GB of confidential data from the tech giant’s servers, with supporting photos. In particular, this concerns the source code of Galaxy devices. Samsung has just confirmed the attack via a press release, without naming the group of hackers. However, the group claims that no personal customer information was compromised.
“We were recently made aware of a security breach involving certain internal company data. Immediately upon discovering the incident, we tightened our security system,” the company said. “Based on our initial analysis, the breach relates to certain source code relating to the operation of Galaxy devices, but does not include the personal information of our consumers or employees. We currently do not anticipate any impact to our business or our customers. We We have measures in place to prevent further such incidents and we will continue to serve our customers uninterrupted.”
Samsung management did not provide further details on the attack and did not indicate that it had received a request for payment or was in negotiations to do so with a group of hackers. The group of hackers Lapsus$ is not at its first attempt: last month, the group had already claimed to have stolen 1 TB of data from GPU giant Nvidia, while posting pictures of some of these data. In response, Nvidia confirmed last week that some employee credentials and proprietary information had been stolen, but also said it did not expect any disruption to its business.
