The approved amount was 2.6 trillion won more than the 59.4 trillion won announced last month and will be used mainly for remittances to small businesses and the self-employed to compensate for losses incurred due to COVID-19 restrictions, the finance minister said.
The extra budget comes as the country is set to hold local elections on June 1, in which South Koreans will vote to elect mayors and provincial governors.
The minister said in a statement that he would not issue bonds to fund the budget but would instead use tax revenues from existing spending plans.
