Postage stamps in various skin colors, from very light to dark. With this action, the Spanish Post wants to draw attention to racism and fight against it. But now a shit storm breaks in on the post office – the action goes badly in the pants.
The reason: the different brands all have different values. While a light brand is worth 1.60 euros, the darkest brand is worth just 70 cents. “The darker the brand, the less value it has,” wrote the Spanish Post in a message.
Shit storm in the population
When sending a package, you therefore need dark instead of light brands. “Each package is therefore an opportunity to reflect on racial inequality,” said the Post.
The fact that the darkest brands have the least value does not go down well with the population, writes the Washington Post. “Accidentally racist,” writes one person on Twitter. One woman writes: “I would change the marketing company,” while others try to help themselves with cartoons.
The Spanish Post has not yet issued a statement. The company announced on Twitter that the stamps should draw attention to “the reality of colored minorities”.
Again and again actions of the Spanish Post
The stamp collection was created in cooperation with the organization “SOS racismo”, which fights against racism in Spain. Between 2016 and 2019, the authorities recorded over 20 percent more incidents involving ethnic minorities than in previous years.
Spain’s Post repeatedly draws attention to itself with political campaigns. In 2019 she launched a stamp collection to draw attention to the fight against the destruction of the environment. Last year she designed stamps in rainbow colors to combat prejudice against the LGBTQ community. (zis)
