SPD receives six posts
Schwesig’s cabinet is becoming more feminine
The members of the government in the northeast have been determined. Six posts go to the Social Democrats, two to the left. For the first time, there will be more women than men in the state government. Now two special party congresses are to approve the coalition agreement.
For the first time in the history of the state, the future red-red state government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania includes more women than men. In addition to Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, the SPD and the Left agreed on four ministers on Thursday. This was announced by Schwesig and the parliamentary group leader of the Left in the state parliament, Simone Oldenburg. The left gets two departments, the election winner SPD six.
Oldenburg will become Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister. The right-wing politician of the left, Jacqueline Bernhardt, takes over the justice department. The previous SPD finance minister, Reinhard Meyer, becomes minister of economics and tourism. His successor in the finance department will be his party colleague and previous state chancellor Heiko Geue. His successor will be clarified later. The previous SPD transport minister Christian level becomes interior minister. The social democrat Stefanie Drese remains minister of social affairs and gets the area of health and pandemic control. The previous Minister of Education, Bettina Martin, also from the SPD, will be responsible for science, culture, federal and European affairs. Till Backhaus from the SPD remains Minister of Agriculture and Environment and receives climate protection as well.
On Thursday evening, the top bodies of the SPD and Linker should be informed about the decisions. Next Saturday, two special party congresses are supposed to approve the coalition agreement. The re-election of Schwesig as prime minister in the state parliament and the appointment of ministers are planned for Monday.
