Special Ops – Lioness: Will there be a second season?

• Season 1 of “Special Ops: Lioness” premiered on Paramount+ in July 2023.
• After the successful start of the series, the question now arises as to whether there will be a second season.
• No new episodes have been announced yet, but the chances are good and the story possibilities are varied.

With “Special Ops: Lioness,” another action-packed series from “Yellowstone” and “Mayor of Kingstown” creator Taylor Sheridan started in July 2023. The Paramount+ series follows CIA agent Joe and her elite unit the “Lioness”.

According to the US magazine “Deadline”, the release of the first two episodes of “Special Ops: Lioness” on July 23, 2023 was the best series start to date within the first 24 hours of Paramount +. The previous record was set in March 2022 by the video game adaptation “Halo.” The series therefore has the best conditions to be renewed for a second season, even if this has not yet happened.

Special Ops – Lioness Season 2: Launch

A second season of “Special Ops: Lioness” has not yet been announced. However, after the success of season 1, an extension is not unlikely. If there is an extension, we assume that the second season will be in Fall/Winter 2024 could start.

Special Ops – Lioness Season 2: Plot

“Special Ops: Lioness” tells of the special unit “Lioness”, which is partly based on a real CIA program. In the first season we accompany a trio of women who are given the task of infiltrating a terrorist network in order to obtain important information.

Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) is a young Lioness agent who is tasked by her trainers Joe (Zoe Saldana) and Kailyn (Nicole Kidman) with befriending the daughter of a terrorist run by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is intended to prevent the largest terrorist attack on US soil since September 1, 2001.

In the Season 1 finale, Cruz meets the series’ big villain for the first time when she attends the wedding of his daughter Aaliyah. Her cover is blown when Aaliyah’s groom, Cruz, comes out as a US Marine. To resolve the situation, the agents knock the groom unconscious and stab Aaliyah’s father Amrohi.

A firefight ensues, but the CIA is able to rescue Cruz from the situation. The mission is therefore a success, but at what cost? According to the headquarters, Amrohi’s murder set the US-Middle East relationship back 40 years.

For Cruz, her Lioness mission was a traumatic experience that has a lasting impact on the young agent. Cruz accuses her instructors of turning her into a killing machine. She murdered an “old man in his underwear.”

Joe tries to appease Cruz by telling her that she stopped one of the worst criminals of the past 20 years. However, that’s not enough to calm the agent down, because Cruz feels like she hasn’t just saved lives.

It is not known how things will continue in a possible second season of “Special Ops: Lioness”. However, given her remorse, it is very unlikely that Cruz will return. It’s given a traumatic perspective on special operations and the effects of a seemingly never-ending war. It doesn’t seem like she wants to repeat this.

At the moment nothing is known about the plot of the possible new episodes. Of course, a new recruit could simply take over for Cruz, but we know from Taylor Sheridan’s previous series that that wouldn’t be his style.

It is quite possible that “Special Ops: Lioness”, like the “Yellowstone” spin-off “1883”, was only planned as a miniseries and therefore ended after one season. This is supported by the fact that the plot of the first season is self-contained and ends without a cliffhanger.

It would also be possible for “Special Ops: Lioness” to become an anthology series. The name of the series gives a clue to this. The Paramount+ production was advertised under the title “Lioness” for a long time before the addition “Special Ops” was added shortly before release.

Perhaps in the second season we can expect an insight into another special unit of the US military, which, like “Lioness”, runs under the joint title “Special Ops”. Maybe we’ll see a “Special Ops: SEAL” or a “Special Ops: MKULTRA” in the new episodes.

Special Ops – Lioness Season 2: Cast

No cast has yet been announced for a possible second season of “Special Ops: Lioness”. However, we assume that many actors from the first season of the Paramount+ series will return.

However, if “Special Ops: Lioness” is an anthology series, then the entire cast will probably be replaced.

Special Ops – Lioness Season 2: Production

“Special Ops: Lioness” comes from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan. The first season was directed by John Hillcoat (“George & Tammy”), Anthony Byrne (“Peaky Blinders – Gangs of Birmingham”) and Paul Cameron (“Westworld”). The leading actresses Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana support the production as executive producers.
