Specialized brands will imitate supermarkets to reduce their energy consumption

Major specialized distribution brands, such as Decathlon, Ikea or Fnac-Darty, will join the protocol of distribution players which aims to reduce the energy consumption of stores, the France Commerce organization announced on Monday July 25.

“We are delighted with the mobilization of the major retail brands, faced with this challenge of energy sobriety and reduction of our electricity consumption”said in a press release Jacques Creyssel, the spokesperson for France Commerce, which brings together food and non-food trade brands.

The efforts of these brands affiliated with France Commerce (Boulanger, Electro Dépôt, Brico Dépôt, Castorama, Decathlon, Fnac-Darty, Ikea, Leroy Merlin) illustrate “the responsible nature of [leur] sector, which has long been committed to reducing its environmental impact”.

“I welcome the announcements made by the major specialist retailers (DIY, household appliances, furniture, etc.) to reduce the electricity consumption of their stores”reacted Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister of Energy Transition. “By mobilizing, the major players in distribution will also allow smaller brands to join these efforts without fear of losing attractiveness”she added, recalling the objective of a 10% reduction in national energy consumption within two years.

An energy “sobriety plan”

According to France Commerce, the protocol provides in particular for the extinction of illuminated signs as soon as the store closes, the reduction of the light intensity inside before the arrival of the public and even when it is present during critical consumption periods. , the drop in the ambient temperature of the points of sale or even the interruption of air renewal during the night.

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, explained on July 14 that the State was preparing a “sobriety plan” energy to deal with the risk of shortages linked to the war in Ukraine, calling for “collectively return to a logic of sobriety”.

Last week, the Perifem federation, which brings together all the distribution players, presented “common and concrete measures”announced from October 15 but on which professionals are working now, to deal with the “risk of electricity supply shortages announced by the government for this winter”.

The first measures have been taken by E.Leclerc, Carrefour, Système U, Les Mousquetaires Intermarché, Auchan, Casino, Franprix, Monoprix, Lidl and even Picard, and Perifem said it hoped that the protocol would serve “basic to all trade and distribution federations for the generalization of these measures”.
