Species extinction – So many car model series are disappearing from the market

Classic sedans and vans are disappearing, SUVs and e-cars are coming. In net terms, however, the variety of passenger cars has shrunk recently.

The variety of models on the European car market is dwindling. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of series offered decreased by 31 net, as the management consultancy Inovev determined. 152 models were phased out, 121 were added. Peugeot had the highest loss rate, where nine models disappeared without a new one being added. At Fiat, the ratio of losses to new items is 8 to 1, Citroen has a net value of 9 to 2. Generation changes within a model series were not counted. In the case of the volume brands with a net loss, it was primarily the less profitable series that were canceled, such as the compact convertible Opel Cascada, the sports coupé Peugeot RCZ or the limousines and vans that had gone out of fashion VW launched new electric cars in existing series, not as standalone models. Not least thanks to the new ID family, VW was able to increase its range by two net items – six losses are offset by eight new products. The plus is even stronger at Mercedes, where five model series were deleted, but nine were added. (SPX)
