Thomas Tuchel is without a club, so the coach should not be short of options to change this status as soon as possible. But the top variant is apparently not there yet. That could change in the near future, because in Spain there may be a spectacular dismissal of the coach.
Thomas Tuchel is waiting. After leaving Chelsea, the coach is unemployed. But that could possibly change soon. A top club should have the German star coach on the list. Several international media are reporting that Atletico Madrid could be the 49-year-old’s next employer. In the “Rojiblancos” club legend Diego Simeone is under a lot of pressure – and possibly before the end.
The Argentinian’s sporting record this season is sobering: In La Liga, the gap to the top, FC Barcelona, is already 13 points, in the Champions League Atletico is in a group with FC Porto and FC Bruges that is classified as feasible and Bayer Leverkusen in last place were eliminated. Madrid also missed out on relegation to the Europa League. Of the last six competitive games, the team was only able to win the cup game against fifth division team SD Almazán.
Measured by the quality of the squad, which still includes footballers like Joao Felix, Jan Oblak and Antoine Griezmann, that’s of course not enough. However, the media does not let on how realistic it is to kick out the iconic Argentinian who has remained. The Spanish portal Fichajes.net at least reports that club boss Enrique Cerezo already has a list of possible candidates. The most prominent name: Tuchel. Former Paris St. Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino is also said to be on the list.
Tuchel does not lack options
Simone has been coaching the club since December 23, 2011. His current working paper runs until June 30, 2024. In the past he had been courted again and again, but remained loyal to his heart club. For the “Rojiblancos” he was also a footballer on the field. The 108-time Argentina international played 163 competitive games for Madrid, spread over two “staff periods”. Both as a player and even more as a trainer, Simeone is known for his hot-bloodedness, and his bullying and blustering manner keeps causing minor excitement and scandal. But he (was) also successful: he was champion twice with Atletico, twice he won the Europa League and once the Spanish Cup.
After his surprising knockout at Chelsea in September, Tuchel is now ready for a new challenge. There hasn’t been a lack of options lately, he just emphasized. “Some clubs have called my manager, but we have agreed that he will not call me here for the next 18 days,” he told the Indian sports magazine “Sportstar” in early November. Bayer Leverkusen and FC Sevilla are said to have been among the potential buyers. Aston Villa and even the English national team were traded as possible new places of employment.
‘I loved every day at Chelsea’
