There is now a big day of action or week of action every year with a speed camera marathon and Speed Week, during which the police carry out more stringent traffic controls. This is primarily about increased speed, which continues to be one of the most common causes of accidents.

The checks took place for the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2012, and then nationwide the following year. Many federal states are now taking part in the speed camera marathon, as are many European countries – in 2019, for example, there were 26.

The day of action is not primarily about collecting as much money as possible from traffic offenders, but rather about prevention. Because excessive speed is still one of the most common causes of accidents.

Dates: Speed Week until April 21st, speed camera marathon on April 19th

The dates for 2024 are known: As Autobild reports, the stricter speed controls will take place during the “Speed Week” campaign between April 15th and 21st. The highlight is the speed camera marathon on April 19, 2024 – a Friday.

On this day there will be lightning from early in the morning until late at night. The police then also work with municipal inspectors. This year, many federal states are taking part in the speed camera marathon, others are not, but are taking part in Speed Week.

You have nothing to fear in Berlin, Lower Saxony, Saarland and Saxony. There are no increased controls here at all. In other federal states, however, you should pay attention to the speed until April 21st.

There is only sporadic information about the measuring points. As a rule, the authorities carry out inspections primarily at accident hotspots and locations with potential for danger – such as schools or retirement homes. In the individual articles linked below for the respective federal states you will find the control points – if available.

Use the speed camera app?

Under no circumstances should you use a speed camera app that warns you about speed cameras. The use of such programs is now prohibited not only for drivers, but also for passengers.

Anyone caught with a speed camera or radar detector in Germany will face a fine of 75 euros and one point in Flensburg. Officials are also allowed to seize devices if necessary.

However, penalties can be significantly more expensive abroad. There are different regulations from country to country, sometimes there is a strict ban on carrying things, sometimes there is just a ban on use. The harshest penalty is in Luxembourg: According to the ADAC, anyone who uses a speed camera detector here as actively for speed camera warnings risks a fine of up to 5,000 euros or even a prison sentence of eight days to a year.

Warn others by flashing your lights?

You should also not warn other road users by flashing your lights. The short flash may only be used in dangerous situations and outside built-up areas to announce an overtaking maneuver and will result in a fine if used improperly. However, you can use a hand signal. According to the Goslar Institute, which spoke to traffic lawyers on this topic, there is nothing wrong with a warning hand signal.
