JJ Abrams is reportedly planning to direct the Spice Girls success story. That keeps the band from the idea.

“Star Wars” director JJ Abrams (55) is said to be planning to make a documentary about the Spice Girls. At least that’s what “MailOnline” reports. According to the report, the film will tell the story of the band’s rise in the mid-1990s. It should also include exclusive interviews and unpublished archive material.

According to an insider, Geri Horner (49), Emma Bunton (46), Melanie Chisholm (48) and Melanie Brown (46) are already on board, according to the newspaper. Victoria Beckham (48) is also “open” to the idea. With a few exceptions, she has not performed with the band since they broke up in 2000. “But this is high quality. And most importantly, she’s not required to sing, which she never wanted to do on stage again,” the alleged insider continued. The chances of all five band members taking part would therefore be good.

Meanwhile, JJ Abrams and his business partner Jason Hehir (45) are rumored to be trying to get the documentary filmed on streaming services like Netflix. The interest seems to be great. Insiders speak of a “bidder dispute” that has flared up.

Star director meets pop stars

No wonder, since the project combines two success stories at the same time: over 100 million records sold make the Spice Girls, founded in 1994, the most successful girl group of all time. Hits like “Wannabe” (1996), “Stop” (1997) or “Spice Up Your Life” (1997) are still being played over and over again by radio stations 25 years after their release.

In the film industry, JJ Abrams was instrumental in directing the success of “Mission: Impossible III” (2006), “Star Trek” (2009) and the “Star Wars” films “The Force Awakens” (2015) and “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). He also wrote the screenplay for “Armageddon – The Last Judgment” (1998).
