Only one film started better in 2023: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has a rocket launch in the USA.
Spider-Man remains a guarantee for strong viewer numbers – also in animated form. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has been successfully launched in cinemas worldwide. The sequel to the surprise hit “Spider-Man: A New Universe” (2018) grossed 120.5 million US dollars in the USA at the start. This reports, among other things, “Variety“.
The film about the teenager Miles Morales, who was bitten by the spider, had the second best opening weekend of the year in the USA. Only one other animated film was more successful. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” grossed $146 million in its first weekend.
Strong worldwide start for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has also had a successful start outside of the USA. Across North America, the sequel grossed another $88 million. The most important market was China with 17.3 million. “Across the Spider-Verse” has sold 208.6 million worldwide.
According to a press release from Sony Pictures, Germany contributed 192,000 viewers. They generated sales of a good 2 million euros.
The predecessor “Spider-Man: A New Universe” started even more moderately five years ago. He got just 35 million dollars to start with. But the film developed into an insider tip. Eventually, it won the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is to round off the trilogy around Miles Morales. A spin-off based on various Spider-Women from the Spider-Verse is also planned. In addition, Miles Morales could also appear in a live-action adaptation.
