The “corona regime” could “only be described as sick,” said Bernd Grimmer on social media. Now the Baden-Württemberg AfD member of the state parliament has died of Covid-19. He is said to have struggled with the disease for weeks.
The Baden-Württemberg AfD member of the state parliament Bernd Grimmer died of Covid-19. He succumbed to his illness on Sunday night, said a spokesman for his Pforzheim-Enz district association. Grimmer was 71 years old.
In the past few months, Grimmer had repeatedly sharply criticized the government’s corona containment measures. In September he wrote on his Facebook page that the “Corona regime” could “only be described as sick”. In June 2020 he also complained about “alarmism” and “scare tactics” in the media.
“It was with great dismay that we learned that our esteemed member of the state parliament, Dr. Bernd Grimmer, has died,” said a message from the AfD state executive. The regional group praised Grimmer as a “member of the first hour” and as a “competent economist”.
According to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, Grimmer was active for free voters and independent citizens before he finally joined the AfD in 2013. Grimmer was elected to the Stuttgart state parliament for the first time in 2016. At that time he achieved the best result for the AfD in Baden-Württemberg with 24.2 percent and achieved the first direct mandate for the state party.
In the state elections in 2021, however, he only received 15.8 percent of the votes and thus lost his direct mandate to Felix Herkens from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. Nevertheless, Grimmer succeeded in re-entering the state parliament via a list place. Grimmer was chairman of the Pforzheim-Enz district association.
According to the “Pforzheimer Zeitung”, he has not participated in the budget deliberations of the municipal council in Pforzheim for several weeks. Outside of his close political environment, nobody knew about the disease, according to the newspaper. According to the AfD, Alfred Bamberger will take over his mandate in the state parliament.
