During the Senate Committee on Culture, Education and Communication, the President of Arcom gave some figures on the performance of the new gendarme. According to him, the institution has blocked no less than 800 sites for the illicit distribution of sports content since January 2022.
As you may know, since January 1, 2021, CSA and Hadopi have merged to become Arcom, the Audiovisual and Digital Communication Regulatory Authority. Of course, the institution quickly madea fight against the illegal distribution of sports content is its main battleground.
To do this, the Arcom has new tools, such as the possibility set up a block on all mirror sites of a condemned platform, or create blacklists “sites seriously and repeatedly infringing copyright and related rights”.
In May 2022 and on the occasion of the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, Arcom presented its latest results, ensuring that the institution had blocked no less than 400 pirate sites since January 2022. In addition, Arcom had added that no less than 1,200 additional sites, directly linked to the illegal sharing of sports content, have been closed.
800 sites blocked by Arcom since January 2022
However, the president of Arcom Roch-Olivier Maistre drew up a new assessment of the organization during the Senate Committee on Culture, Education and Communication which was held this Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
First of all, the boss of the Web policeman admitted the effectiveness of the new legal framework deployed, which, in his words, allows Arcom “to have a much faster and more reactive action thanks to a well-organized dialogue between the judge, the beneficiaries of the demonstrations, the internet service providers and our authority”.
A drop in sports piracy of around 50%
Of course, the boss took the opportunity to reveal some figures. Thereby, Arcom claims to have blocked no less than 800 pirate sites and IPTV since January 2022. According to the head of the institution, this has made it possible to “to reduce sports piracy by almost 50% during the first half of the year”.
It should be remembered that the beneficiaries can henceforth go directly to the judge to claim the blocking and referencing a site that illegally broadcasts sports matches or competitions. When a report is made, the judge takes it up and can order the ISPs to block the offending sites. “In the event of the reappearance of mirror sites, which is often the case, this time, it is the administrative authority that can request the blocking of the sites”. recalls the boss of Arcom.
