Spotify is conducting an experiment to study the behavior of Internet users if they are deprived of the display of lyrics. A test that targets listeners who go through the free offer, in order to push them towards the subscription.
There may be upcoming change in the contents of Spotify’s free offer. As noted by several Internet users on September 5, 2023, the Swedish platform is considering removing a feature from its freemium to reserve it for those who have an active subscription. This service is the display of lyrics, which allows among other things to make your own little karaoke.
Lyric display has been available on Spotify for just under two years – the option is available on both the music service’s mobile apps and desktop software. It’s not the only platform to offer a display of this kind: Deezer, one of Spotify’s big competitors, also offers the lyrics to hum along.
A test in progress at Spotify
Contacted by our colleagues from The Verge, Spotify has confirmed that a limited test in this direction is underway, without specifying its scope, duration or purposes. “ We regularly conduct a number of tests, some of which end up paving the way for a broader user experience and some of which only serve to learn important lessons. “said a spokesperson.
The rocking of the lyrics behind the subscription is officially not decided. However, such a decision could be motivated by the desire to make paid formulas even more attractive. Spotify seeks to convert as many of its listeners as possible into subscribers, who are financially more attractive – the basic subscription costs 10.99 euros per month.
This desire to enrich the characteristics of its premium is also part of a context of strong competition with other platforms – Deezer, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, etc. The features are a differentiating element in this, in addition to exclusive content and additional services (such as audio books).
