Spring is trying to make up for winter’s snow deficit. The next batch of fresh snow will follow at the weekend. There is also a risk of snow on the north-south axis.

Snow maximum in April
Astonishing at first glance, logical at second glance: the highest snowfall is measured in the high Alps in April. Snowfall accumulates throughout the winter season, so that the maximum snow depth is only reached in spring. Last winter was characterized by a chronic lack of snow. At least there is still some fresh snow at the end of the season. Perhaps the standard value will then be reached at the weekend, for example at the Weissfluhjoch measuring station. The snow in the Alps is an important water reserve for the remainder of spring and summer.

How much snow can we expect?
In high-altitude towns such as Andermatt, Davos or Arosa, the winter continues. But there is also fresh snow in the lower mountain regions: on the weekend the snow line is between 800 and 1300 m, on Sunday on the northern flank of the Alps possibly even lower. In the mountains of central and eastern Switzerland, 20 to 50 cm of fresh snow will fall locally by Sunday evening, while the amounts will be lower in the other regions. The following applies, especially with summer tires: on the north-south axis and on passes risk of snow observe.
