Square Enix: it’s the collapse, the fault of Final Fantasy XVI and its producers

Since the release of Final Fantasy XVI last June, the stock market value of Square Enix fell by two billion dollars. The Japanese studio was however pleased with the good sales of its RPG (temporarily) exclusive to the PlayStation 5 shortly after the launch, but in the medium term, FF 16 is a commercial disappointment.

Bloomberg immersed himself in the disappointments of Square Enixand the situation is complicated. Marvel’s The Avengers, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Babylon’s Fall, Forspoken, these are all AAA games that were supposed to be a hit, but were quickly forgotten, after mixed reviews. Average titles, with average ratings, which fail to make an impression and which weaken Square Enix, whether its finances or its image. A problem perfectly summarized by analyst Serkan Toto:

Square Enix is ​​having problems releasing their games… These titles get a 70% rating on Metacritic, are pretty decent, and are just very forgettable.

According to information from Bloombergthe Japanese studio obviously intends to raise the bar internally, and this would involve the way of creating these games. Square Enix thought of his games as projects of a single producer, without really structuring the development team, and he will change that for his future productions. As a reminder, the presidency of Square Enix changed this year, Takashi Kiryu replaced Yosuke Matsuda, who had been there for 10 years.

Fortunately, Square Enix already has some highly anticipated titles that should allow him to keep his head above water.
