Squid Game 2: controversy over the filming of the Netflix series

While filming for season 2 of Squid Game has just started, a controversy has already tainted the canning of new episodes of Netflix’s ultra-popular South Korean series.

It is one of Netflix’s most popular and lucrative series and its return is highly anticipated by fans. The planetary phenomenon Squid Game returns with a second burst of episodes after the immense success of its first season.

Subscribers were able to discover a first teaser during the TUDUM event in Sao Paulo which confirmed the return of actors Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun, ex n°456), Lee Byung-Hun (Hwang In-ho, l masked agent), Wi Ha-jun (Hwang Jun-ho, the policeman) and Gong Yoo (the Game’s participant recruiter).

A season 2 already under the influence of controversy

This new season of Squid Game was unveiled with great fanfare but the controversies have been linked ever since. The announcement of four newcomers in Season 2 – Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon and Yang Dong-Geun – has been heavily criticized since the cast, so far, is 100% male.

Netflix reacted to the controversy by explaining that it was only part of the cast and then revealed the rest of the cast: Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.

Again, the American giant caused an uproar with this announcement since the arrival of actor Choi Seung-hyun in the casting was not very well received. This 35-year-old rapper and former member of the boy band Big Bang, whose stage name is TOP, had indeed created a scandal a few years ago in South Korea for using marijuana, for which he was sentenced to ten months suspended prison sentence and two years probation.

Despite this controversy, TOP has joined the filming of Squid Game season 2, which is currently underway in Seoul and Incheon according to information from Maeil Kyungjae via Koreaboo. Neither director Hwang Dong Hyuk nor Netflix had commented on this.

By the way, it seems that TOP is playing the role of a retired idol [célébrité façonnée et travaillée par une agence qui s’illustre en chant et danse dans la K-pop avec une image et un style particulier en solo ou en groupe, ndlr] and his character should be bigger than expected.

For his part, the star Lee Jung-jae, who would have asked an incredible sum per episode, would have already filmed his first shots in secret. Filming started not long ago but a hiccup has already tainted it.

According AllKpop, an anonymous netizen posted a complaint on July 11 regarding the filming of Squid Game Season 2 at Incheon International Airport. According to this person, a staff member prohibited people from using a public escalator during filming and did so in a rude manner.

A representative from Squid Game then shared an apology: “We saw a message from a citizen who was uncomfortable during the filming of Squid Game Season 2 at Incheon International Airport on July 10. We have tried our best to inform the public by details of the on-site situation during filming. We apologize for making people feel uncomfortable. We sincerely thank those who understood the filming, and we will be even more careful during filming in the future.”

For the moment, no release date for Squid Game season 2 has been revealed by Netflix. But it seems that we will have to wait a little while before discovering the new episodes, which are just starting to be boxed. Hoping for the team that other controversies do not arise during the shooting.
