  • The successful Korean series “Squide Game” will have a second season in 2024.
  • Numerous familiar faces are returning for this, but many new characters will also make an appearance.
  • In addition to the second season, Netflix is planning an entire “Squid Game” universe, which already includes a reality show and will be expanded to include a third season and an animated series.

The South Korean Netflix hit caused a sensation worldwide and stayed in the top 10 of the streaming service for weeks. The battle royale series “Squid Game” became a real series success and even overtook “Bridgerton” in terms of success. Netflix decided early on: There will be a season 2 of “Squid Game”..

The pitch-black series about deadly children’s games and the heavily indebted people who take part in them hits a nerve – which is probably not least because “Squid Game” can also be read as a commentary on modern capitalism. But the financial success for Netflix and the series’ large fan base is probably the main reason for the sequel.

Is there a start date for “Squid Game” season 2?

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed in November 2021 that he is in the process of planning the plot for Season 2. So far we can only speculate about a start date. According to Hwang, the new episodes should actually appear in early 2023. It is now clear: “Squid Game” season 2 will be released in 2024. However, an exact date is still awaited.

Squid Game: Plot

With the ending left open and some unanswered questions after the season finale, there is certainly enough potential for a sequel. So there is a winner of the deadly games in Seong Gi-hun, number 456 (Lee Jung-jae). But he turns around shortly before his departure from Korea – possibly to take revenge on the organizers of the games.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told US magazine Deadline about the plot: “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say.”

When asked if Season 2 would explore the same themes as Season 1, Hwang told Vanity Fair: “Humanity is being tested once again through these games. I want to ask the question: ‘Is true solidarity possible between people?'”

When asked if we will see characters from Season 1 in Season 2, Hwang said he will try to bring them back. Kang Sae-byeok (played by HoYeon Jung) could have a twin sister.

But the director addressed a less obvious point in an interview with The Times: “While I was working on the first season, I was thinking about the stories that could be explored in a possible second season. And one of them is the character’s story of the frontman.”

The frontman’s return could have been confirmed alongside Gi-hun’s in an interview with the industry publication Deadline. “[…] “I think the frontman will come back too,” said series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.

The Frontman is the alias of the person behind the black mask who seemingly held the reins for most of the first season. But it would later turn out that the frontman was Hwang In-ho, the brother of police officer Hwang Jun-ho, who sneaks into the game to investigate what happened to his brother In-Ho.

Since Hwang In-ho was also a former police officer, Hwang wanted to pursue exactly this approach, reports the online magazine EpicStream.

I think the issue of police officers is not only important in Korea. […] I see in global reporting that police forces wait too long to respond – there are too many victims or a situation gets worse just because they don’t act quickly enough. That was one of the themes I wanted to address in the series. Maybe I can cover more of this in Season 2.

Hwang revealed to AP Entertainment that Gi-hun will return and that he will do something for the world. Meanwhile, fans have come up with numerous fan theories about “Squid Game.”

“Squid Game” season 3 and animated film

Netflix wants to build the franchise into an entire series universe: “The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun,” announced Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, according to a report in the online magazine Deadline. There are already plans for a season 3 of the South Korean hit series and an animated film project are also being planned.

Squid Game: The Challenge

The real implementation of “Squid Game” has also been available on Netflix since November 2023. In “Squid Game: The Challenge,” the streaming service lets hundreds of participants solve various mini-games that are reminiscent of the Korean series. The 456 international candidates are playing for prize money of 4.56 million US dollars. A second season for the reality show has already been confirmed.

These actors appear in season 2 of “Squid Game”.

At the Netflix fan event TUDUM in June 2023, we finally found out which actors to expect in “Squid Game” Season 2. So the revenge story of number 456, Seong Gi-hun, continues, as Lee Jung-jae (“Svaha: The Sixth Finger”) returns in the new episodes. Gong Yoo is also back on board as “The Salesman”, who recruited Seong Gi-hun and others for the games in season 1.

The story of the frontman alias Hwang In-ho, played by Lee Byung-hun (“Terminator: Genisys”), and his brother Hwang Jun-ho, portrayed by Wi Ha-jun (“White Coffee”), will also be in focus from season 2.

Of course, most of the main characters from season 1 died in the “Squid Game”, so season 2 needs a lot of new faces. You can look forward to the new additions Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun. However, it is not yet known who they will play in the second season.

In a second wave of confirmation, the actors and actresses Park Gyu-young (“Sweet Home”, “Celebrity”), Jo Yu-ri (from the K-pop group Iz*One), Kang Ae-sim (“Be Melodramatic” ), Lee David (“The Fortress”), Lee Jin-uk (“Sweet Home”), Roh Jae-won (“Missing Yoon”) and Won Ji-an (DP) were announced. Also K-pop star Choi Seung-hyun will play a role in the sequel to the Netflix hit. He was formerly a member of the band “Big Bang” under the name TOP, one of the K-pop bands that started the international K-pop success story.

Squid Game: Production

The “Squid Game” creator explained that writing the scripts for the series was “harder than normal” for him. He would have spent six months writing the first two episodes alone. This is partly because “Squid Game” is the South Korean’s first series. Previously, he exclusively directed films such as the 2011 drama “Silenced”.

Several authors and changing directors for the production of individual episodes: This is actually the norm in today’s series landscape. However, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote all episodes of his show himself and also sat in the director’s chair for all 9 episodes.

Literally, Hwang Dong-hyuk said in the past: “I don’t have any developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2’. It’s very tiring just thinking about it. But if I should do it, I definitely wouldn’t do it alone. I would consider using a writers’ room and would want a variety of experienced directors for this.”

Even after Season 2 was confirmed, Hwang didn’t sound particularly euphoric. There is “so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. I almost feel like there’s no other choice,” he told AP Entertainment.
