St. Margarethen – Mystery of the Lungau church tower time capsule solved

A mysterious object was discovered during the renovation of the church tower in St. Margarethen in Lungau last October. The archdiocese archive has now provided the solution to the Lungau riddle.

Something was found during the renovation of the church tower roof in St. Margarethen in Lungau last year: weather-beaten paper in a small tube, the writing barely legible. In addition, three Heller coins were packed. The capsule was stuck in the old cross of the church tower, which was renewed. The parish wanted to know more about the mysterious vessel. However, wind and weather played badly on the document. “Unfortunately, most of the message on the fragments is no longer legible. The information is very poor,” explains St. Margarethen’s parish assistant Christian Schober. Almost a year later, the mystery of the time capsule has been solved. Schober had given the small tube into the hands of the archdiocese. The capsule with paper and coins was probably deposited on the occasion of the new church tower cross in 1913. The three Heller coins and a barely legible signature on the document from the then St. Margarethen pastor Martin Jud confirmed the suspicion. Further evidence: The coins have a combined value of 13 Heller and Jud worked as the parish priest from 1899 to 1924. On the occasion of the dedication of the church tower last October, another time capsule was prepared for posterity. This time photos and letters from the community were packed into the capsule. This time better and supposedly safe.
