- “Star Trek Beyond” is getting a sequel with “Star Trek 4”. Chris Pine and Co. are to return to the “Star Trek” universe.
- Since Chekov actor Anton Yelchin passed away in 2016, the question is who will replace Chekov.
- Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) would be the perfect character to fill Chekov’s post on the Enterprise.
Nobody would have expected the “Star Trek Beyond” sequel, but “Star Trek 4” will start in cinemas in December 2023. At least that’s the plan. Another part of the plan calls for Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and company to return to the USS Enterprise in their previous roles.

So there is finally a reunion with Kirk (Pine), Spock (Quinto), Pille (Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). Unfortunately there will be no reunion with Chekov. Although the role in the film series is still alive, actor Anton Yelchin tragically passed away in 2016 at just 27 years old.
At the time, producer JJ Abrams promised he wouldn’t be recast for the role, and we’re sure he’ll keep that promise today. Thus, Chekov will not appear and the post of navigator aboard the Enterprise is not taken in “Star Trek 4”. Why Chekov abdicates in the logic of the film remains to be seen.
However Chekov gets out, the USS Enterprise will need a new navigator, and for that Abrams and director Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) don’t even need to find a new star. With the established role of Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) from “Star Trek Beyond” they already have a perfect successor.
Jaylah was well received by fans. The character is intelligent, funny and likeable. At the end of “Star Trek Beyond” she went to Starfleet Academy. As it has now been six years since the last film, the world of the films will also have some years to go by, allowing Jaylah to finish her training and serve as a cadet on the Enterprise.
As the new navigator, she would be an acceptable replacement for Chekov, although Yelchin will of course be absent from the film. We will surely know more soon. “Star Trek 4” is scheduled to start in German cinemas on December 21, 2023.
The “Star Trek” universe is not only on the big screen. Plenty of new Star Trek releases are on the way and Star Trek: Picard Season 2 is coming soon. At the same time, the last episodes of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 4 will be released.
