In the cult series “Starship Enterprise – The Next Century” Picard had only a few love stories. Probably the most important is the one with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), the ship’s doctor on the USS Enterprise. However, the two swallow their feelings and a real romance never materializes.
What do Laris and Dr. crusher? Both women are intelligent, kind, emotionally reflective and courageous…in addition, each has a dead husband who was very good friends with Jean-Luc Picard.
In “The Next Century” we learn more about Jack Crusher, who served under Picard aboard the USS Stargazer. Picard himself shares some of the blame for Jack’s death and carries that burden deep within himself. Laris’ husband died between seasons 1 and 2 of “Star Trek: Picard” without it being shown.
With him, too, Picard was good friends and intimately acquainted. Whether intended by the authors or not, this is a parallel that challenges Picard’s emotional bonds. A small, bitter aftertaste and at the same time a great tragedy!
