A recent survey by the CSA Institute published Sunday May 5, 2024, on behalf of CNews, Europe 1, and the Sunday Newspaperhighlights an overwhelming consensus among the French regarding the incarceration of perpetrators of physical violence awaiting judgment. The figures are striking: 81% of those surveyed were in favor of this measure, while only 18% oppose it. This trend largely concerns different categories of the population, with a slight advantage for women (84%) compared to men (77%). Young people aged 18 to 24 show particularly strong support, with 89% of them in favor of this practice. The study also highlights disparities depending on political orientation of respondents on the question. Right-wing voters are the most likely to support the systematic incarceration of perpetrators of physical violence (88%), while among left-wing voters, support rates vary between 62 and 73%. In terms of age, those aged 35-49 are slightly less favorable to this measure, with 76% of them in agreement.
A 7% increase in the number of victims of physical violence
These results are part of a context marked by growing concern about public security, particularly after a 7% increase in the number of victims of physical violence recorded in 2023, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. A context also marked by business, Matisse in Châteauroux, Philippe in Grande-Synthe and Thomas in Crépol who recently hit the headlines. This concern is all the more serious given that more than half of physical violence takes place in the intra-family context, affecting both men and women, while sexual violence remains predominantly directed against women, whatever the context. Furthermore, a survey carried out by Odoxa for the Agipi insurance association revealed in November 2023 that 31% of women in France have already suffered domestic violence and 22% even experience it from their current partner.
