Star Trek: Spectacular reveal in the trailer – will the USS Defiant return in season 5?

A new trailer for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 has been released and impresses with lots of action, excitement and great emotions. After all, this is the final season of the sci-fi series. However, there are also all sorts of details to be glimpsed that are not immediately apparent. One of these details points to the return of the USS Defiant.

The USS Defiant is a spaceship that first appeared in Star Trek in the episode “The Spider’s Web.” Through experiments from the mirror universe it was finally drawn into the parallel universe. In “Star Trek: Enterprise” the Defiant appeared again in the double episode “The Dark Side of the Mirror”.

Constitution Class in the Mirror Universe

The spaceship set seen in the trailer is reminiscent of the Enterprise set in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” The infirmary, the interior – if you can call it that – everything suggests that the Constitution-class starship is from the 23rd century, like the Enterprise.

On board the ominous spaceship, Book (David Ajala) and Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) exchange blows with the newly introduced villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis). The already mentioned similarity to the Enterprise set from “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” suggests that it is a Constitution class.

Will the USS Defiant appear in “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5?

If we look at all existing Star Trek films and series, there is one Constitution Class starship that we know of that disappeared into the Mirror Universe. It is the USS Defiant (NCC-1764), a sister ship of the Enterprise. In the “Star Trek” episode “The Spider’s Web”, the Defiant comes into a Tholian area and ends up in a kind of limbo between two universes.

It switches back and forth, which also has an effect on the crew, who end up killing each other. It turns out that it is an experiment by the Tholians from the mirror universe, which wants to establish contact with the Tholians in the main universe.

In “Star Trek: Enterprise” we then learn that the USS Defiant not only crossed over into the Mirror Universe and went missing, but also traveled in time. Almost a hundred years into the past of a neighboring universe, the Defiant disappeared.

But it is still active a hundred years later, when in the first season of “Star Trek: Discovery” the crew of the Discovery comes to the mirror universe in the year 2257. There, data from the Defiant is used to learn more about the universe change and a possible return journey.

How could the Defiant’s appearance come about?

There have been rumors for a long time that “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 will return to the mirror universe. Kovich (David Cronenberg) in particular has had a passion for exploring the mirror universe since his first appearance. From trailers and images, it appears that Kovich himself will also be joining at least one Discovery mission.

Even though the crew of the Discovery jumps into the mirror universe, the question naturally arises as to how they can meet the Defiant. The spaceship comes from another millennium. Time travel would also have to be part of the plot.

In the latest “Star Trek: Discovery” trailer there is a hint that Michael Burnham and Co. will travel back in time. We see Starbase 1, as we know from the first two seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery,” which are set in the 23rd century, and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.”
