In “Star Trek: Lower Decks” Season 4, William Boimler, the newly minted Section 31 agent, was not brought back. This raises the question of why!
- The return of Section 31 was announced in the third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, only to find no mention in season 4.
- The center of the “Section 31” story was supposed to be Boimler’s mean twin William. Why wasn’t he brought back? His story may be saved for the film “Star Trek: Section 31.”
The fourth season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” has concluded and a storyline announced in season 3 was not taken up: William Boimler’s connection to Section 31. The doppelganger of the “Lower Decks” protagonist, who Brad believed to be dead, therefore has potential upcoming film “Star Trek: Section 31”.
It’s strange for a series as detailed-loving as “Lower Decks” to simply drop such an ominous scene from season 3 and not discuss it for over a season. However, since the “Star Trek” universe is currently increasingly trying to bring the different stories together, see the crossover with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, we can possibly look forward to a live-action comeback from Jack Quaid.
Star Trek: Jack Quaid played Brad Boimler in SNW, is he now playing William Boimler in Section 31?
On April 18, 2023, the streaming film “Star Trek: Section 31” was announced, which will come directly to Paramount + and will revolve around the titular organization. Michelle Yeoh will return as Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery in the lead role. When the film will be scheduled in the “Star Trek” chronology has so far been left open.
Since Georgiou was sent through a portal into an as yet undetermined time in the third “Discovery” season, all doors are open and so are those to “Star Trek: Lower Decks”. The “Lower Decks” era offers the most potential for further cameos, after all, the series takes place between “The Next Century” and “Star Trek: Picard”. So this era would only make sense if you wanted to further connect the expansive “Star Trek” universe.
And with William Boimler, who was created in a transporter accident and is a doppelganger of Brad Boimler, we would already have another member of the secret organization from the era that deals with Starfleet’s dirty work who could join forces with Michelle Yeoh’s Georgiou .
Star Trek: An ominous teaser that fizzles out into nothingness?!
In the eighth episode of the third season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” Brad Boimler learns that his doppelganger, who served under William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) aboard the USS Titan, died in a gas leak. However, we as viewers later learn that William survived and was secretly recruited by Section 31. William Boimler laughs darkly and looks into the camera.
It’s surprising that this wasn’t mentioned at all in season 4. Admittedly, the return of Spock’s brother was also announced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, only to be ignored for a season, so it doesn’t mean anything, but…
…it could be that William Boimler’s storyline is being saved for a “bigger” story, such as in the film “Section 31”, which coincidentally will deal with the very organization that William recently joined.
With the announcement of the “Section 31” film and the popularity of the crossover between “Lower Decks” and “Strange New Worlds”, it is quite logical and likely that actor Jack Quaid will slip into the live-action costume again here and this one Mal embodied Brad’s sinister twin alongside Michelle Yeoh.
Of course, this is pure speculation; there is little official information. But the rumor mill also suggests that Alexander Siddig as Dr. Bashir returns and this would mean that “Section 31” would fall exactly in the time of “Lower Decks”, which would make it difficult to ignore William Boimler as a new member of the secret organization.
A start date for “Star Trek: Section 31” has not yet been set. Filming was actually supposed to start this fall, but this had to be postponed due to the strikes. A start is not expected before the end of 2025. We list all new “Star Trek” releases for you!
