The new series of the Star Wars franchise and prequel to the movie “Rogue One” will be released on Disney+ at the end of the summer and already promises to be more ambitious than ever!
Andor is indeed shaping up to be the most daring Star Wars franchise television project to date. Thanks to the latest issue of Empire Magazine, we now know that the Rogue One prequel series is set to explore a span of five years through 24 episodes split between two seasons. Season 1 will focus on the first year of Cassian Andor’s tenure (played by Diego Luna, also the show’s executive producer) as a spy for the budding Rebel Alliance, while the already-ordered Season 2 will focus for the other four years.
“The scale of the series is enormous,” said showrunner and screenwriter Tony Gilroy. “The directors work in blocks of three episodes, we did four blocks [dans la saison 1] three episodes each. We looked at this and thought, ‘Wow, that would be really cool if we came back and used a block to represent a year. We will get closer to‘a year with each block.’”
“It’s an intense and epic story with a huge ensemble cast and many, many characters you meet on your way to Cassian Andor”, added executive producer Sanne Wohlenberg. “We follow those particular formative years of the rebellion, as well as the Empire. VS‘is always an extraordinary time when people are under pressure to wake up and stand up for who they are, and are willing to make sacrifices.”
A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE
Like the film that spawned it, the show takes a more “down-to-earth” approach to the legendary and beloved galaxy far away. Here no Jedi wielding lightsabers and trusting an invisible force. Instead, a story based on ordinary citizens trying to get rid of a fascist dictatorship is presented.
“If Star Wars is a highly successful hotel or restaurant, we’re in the kitchen,” continued Gilroy, who wrote five of the first season’s 12 episodes. “We are the molecular, the granular, we are behind, below. We have 1500 pages of script to tell this story. So we have a lot to talk about and we’re exploring quite deep.”
In addition to its titular protagonist, the series will also feature the return of sassy Imperial droid, K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk), maverick resistance fighter Saw Gerrera (Forrest Whittaker), and future leader of the Alliance. rebel, Mon Mothma (Geneviève O’Reilly).
“When we start Andor she’s entangled in the Empiresaid O’Reilly of her character who, after her time as a member of the Galactic Senate, is convinced that an underground movement is the only way to effect real change.
Stellan Skarsgård (Dune), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter), Denise Gough (Robin Hood), Adria Arjona (Morbius), Kyle Soller (Poldark) and Robert Emms (His Dark Materials) will also be featured in roles that will not however, have not yet been revealed.
Andor will debut with two episodes next Wednesday, August 31 on Disney+.
