Star Wars: Kevin Feige and Rogue Squadron films canceled by Lucasfilm?

“Do it or don’t. There is no try.” Lucasfilm seems to have fully embraced this Yoda maxim, since the studios have apparently decided to cancel two expected projects from the Star Wars universe: a film produced by Kevin Feige, big boss of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins. We take stock.

Star Wars in the Dark Side of the Force

It’s cleaning up in the galaxy far, far away. According to our colleagues from variety and sources close to Lucasfilm, the studios would have clarified the fate of the films in the Star Wars universe. The first victim would be a highly anticipated project, Star Wars: Rogue Squadrona feature film to be directed by Patty Jenkins.

In 2020, the director of wonder woman had announced the development of a film which was to introduce “a new generation of pilots, as they prove their worth and risk their lives in a high-speed thrill ride, and bring the saga into the future era of the galaxy”. The film was even announced to be released in theaters in December 2023, but until then showed no apparent signs of life, no announced cast or date of filming. According to sources close to Lucasfilm, Rogue Squadron wouldn’t be like this “no longer in active development”.

The other fallen project would be the Star Wars movie that Kevin Feige and Kathleen Kennedy were developing. Last year, the MCU kingpin announced that he was in the middle of writing with screenwriter Michael Waldron (Doctor Strange 2) and was very enthusiastic: “I like having the freedom to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or a prequel. […] It’s a different exercise.”

If confirmed, these cancellations would cast an even darker veil over the future of the galactic saga. Several series have certainly emerged on the Disney + streaming platform, including the unequals Andor, The Mandalorian And Obi-wan Kenobibut no Star Wars movie has been released in theaters since December 2019 and The Rise of Skywalker.

What future for the Star Wars franchise?

In light of this new information, no movie in the Star Wars universe has yet officially been given the green light to go into production. Admittedly, several projects seem to be in development, but Lucasfilm remains very nebulous on this subject. Among these projects, that of Taika Waititi (jojo rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder), which the director is also expected to star in, seems on track. Other films developed by Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi, At Knives Out), Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and Damon Lindelof (Lost, watch men) are in the pipeline, but without details on their respective states of progress.

At the moment, the only concrete horizon is the date of December 19, 2025, blocked by Lucasfilm for the release of an upcoming Star Wars movie yet. “untitled”. Which will it be? Will this date be maintained? Nothing is less sure.
