Power struggles on Tatooine were featured in “The Book of Boba Fett.” Guillermo del Toro previously wanted to make a very similar “Star Wars” film about Jabba.

“Star Wars” fans who were already not particularly enthusiastic about the series “The Book of Boba Fett” now have another reason to resent Disney’s “The Mandalorian” spin-off. It looks like Disney+ production has ensured that a planned film about Guillermo del Toro’s Jabba will never be made.
“The Godfather” in Space
Disney has often had “Star Wars” meetings with major directors. Many of them were definitely interested in making their own “Star Wars” film, as they themselves grew up with the first Skywalker trilogy. That’s what happened to “Shape of Water” director Guillermo del Toro, who told Yahoo back in 2015 what kind of “Star Wars” project he would be interested in.
I would do a kind of Godfather saga about what Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. Firstly, because it’s the character that looks most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt mafia, a very complex coup. I just like the character.
Guillermo del Toro
At that point, del Toro was still talking about a purely hypothetical film, but now author David S. Goyer revealed on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he has actually written a script for a Jabba film that del Toro will direct should.
But according to Goyer, there was a lot going on at Lucasfilm at the time and the script was never made into a film. The project probably had too many similarities to “The Book of Boba Fett” and Disney gave the series the go-ahead because of its “The Mandalorian” reference.
In the series, Boba Fett takes over Jabba’s palace on Tatooine and fights to be seen as the top crime lord. He also receives a visit from two Hutts, but Jabba is already long dead at this point.
Even if the Jabba movie never gets made, the resulting script could easily become a novel or a comic. It wouldn’t be the first time in the “Star Wars” franchise that discarded concepts were given a second chance.
