Star Wars: Visions is back on Disney+ for Season 2. The animated series tells an independent storyline in a different animation style in each episode. The first season consisted of anime movies, the second season is more global. But do the stories belong to the official “Star Wars” universe?

There are a great many “Star Wars” stories and not all of them are official canon. For example, after acquiring Lucasfilm, Disney de-canoned all books and comics in order to have more creative freedom. Non-canon stories are called “Legends”.

Of course, there is now the question of where “Star Wars: Visions” is assigned. That question is easy to answer: “Star Wars: Visions” is not canon. The stories are completely detached from the Skywalker saga and the other Disney+ series.

The question as to why Disney+ is intentionally producing a non-canon series is also easy to answer: creative freedom! Disney wants to give the studios that contribute the stories a free hand. You should let off steam without restrictions in the “Star Wars” universe.

Could Star Wars: Visions eventually become canon?

While the first season of Star Wars: Visions was clearly not part of canon, the series made some changes in the second season. The stories take place way back in time like “Sith” for example, so characters like Lola could basically show up in canon one day.

By telling stories that are detached from the rest, but in no way contradict the canon, “Visions” allows Disney to implement bolder ideas and gauge audience reactions to eventually bring certain elements into the official canon after all.

In the first season, for example, the character Ronin was very well received, so that he received a comic sequel. While this is still non-canon, it could be the reason why Disney decided to make the stories closer to canon for Season 2 of Visions. Potential was sensed in individual characters.
